London prefers Paris to Brussels

Posted by Stanley Crossick on 29/02/08

From 31 March 2008, UK passport applicants in Belgium will need to apply for a renewal or new passport from the British Consulate General in Paris by post or in person. Only 40 days notice has been given.

It is hard to imagine anyone with experience of the vagaries of the Belgian postal sytsem mailing their passport to Paris, particular as most British residents of Brussels are frequent travelers.

Do the financial savings outweigh this inconvenience and additional cost and negative symbolism? Perhaps there are still those in London who do not approve of Brits making their careers in Brussels.

There is still time for David Miliband, the British Foreign Secretary, to rescind this decision. If you are a British national or resident you can petition the Prime Minister.
