The initiative ‘Global Zero’, launched in Paris on 9 December, has received insufficient publicity. More than 100 international leaders are supporting a campaign to eliminate nuclear weapons. Not surprisingly, a new worldwide poll shows overwhelming support for getting to zero nuclear weapon.Although the signatories are mainly former leaders, all current major leaders seem to support this goal, including Vladimir Putin.
Barack Obama could set an example by asking Congress to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, signed in 1996, and ratified by 148 countries, but which does not come into force until the US ratifies.
This is surely an issue on which public opinion can be roused. There are clearly better uses for the money involved. In the meantime, why not sign the Declaration?Author : Stanley Crossick
