During his recent visit to Europe, President Barack Obama firmly stated on more than one occasion his support for the US missile defence shield. Previously, the impression given was that it would not be built. Why did he express himself so positively, while seeking to improve relations with Russia?

There is more than one possible explanation. He may be seeking to give the Russians an incentive to put more pressure on Iran over its nuclear programme, or indeed to use it in the negotiating with Iran. He may have bowed to intense pressure from the Israeli, Czech and Polish lobbies.

Let’s hope that it is not the latter.
