I have as yet not even heard serious gossip as to who President Obama will nominate as Ambassador to the European Union. and was wondering whether this was a reflection of the relevance of Europe to the new president.
However, Beijing too is still without a nomination; although possible names have been mentioned. From 1 July, the US embassy will be decapitated by the retirement of its chargé d’affaires.
So it seems to be the system that is causing the problem. Bilateral ambassadors may have generally decreased in importance with modern communications and government ministers notching up their air miles, but the United States should not have delegations as important as the EU and China without ambassadors for many months.Author : Stanley Crossick
